Dante Anyone?
This is the view from outside our apartment door. We live on what would be considered the "Fourth Floor" in the U.S., and what the Germans would try and pass off as the "Third Floor".
One of the interesting things about this hallway is that it is completely enclosed - no windows - with a glass skylight at the top. So, you end up with a palpable thermal gradient as you ascend or descend. Street level is about 65 degrees, and with each floor upwards the temperature increases by about 10 degrees. Right when you start to feel the burn of the steps (on the 3rd floor) the temperature bumps up to about 95 for the last remaining flight. Very fun. Word of warning to our potential visitors - better spend about 2o minutes a day on the Stairmaster in preparation :-)

How does SJ handle the stairs? C loves them. (Who needs a stairmaster when you can just go up and down and up and down and up and down...?) But I think he might get tired of so very many just to get home after a hard day of play at the park or something. And I have a feeling we would get tired of waiting for him to finish the climb, though in my present condition we'd probably be going at the same rate and I'd just be thankful I wasn't carrying him.
In fact, I'd be tempted to just go out in the morning and only come back in time for dinner and bed!
Well, Sydney will usually climb about 1/2 way up at a very slow pace - which is not bad for me (Jill) who is usually carrying the parcels and toys up the stairs as well. Sometimes she will just sit down and say "sit down?" Other times after walking up a few she will want to turn around and go down - "stop, Sydney, wrong way" - which usually entices her to go down even faster!! Today I had the unfortunate experience of carrying an asleep Sydney up the whole flight - she couldn't even help by doing her part to hold on to me. I thought I might die! Fortunately, the landlord lets us keep her stoller folded up by the front door. That request was put into him after carrying Sydney, the stoller and our fresh fruit from the farmer's market up the stairs on the first day here! Yikes. Well, the good news is that we now do not have to feel guilty about stopping at any one of the numerous and extremely delicious bakeries :)
